i think they wrote the first few episodes, got whacked out of their heads and let their kids finish writing the script.

According to the DVD extras from (I believe) Season 1, they developed the idea and began writing barely ahead of the filming schedule. They have an overall story arch in mind for several seasons, but the actual writing is not done much ahead of filming. For example, as they were casting they discovered certain people (Like Sun and Jin) and wrote them into the story.
Also they have said that when cast members have ideas they will write them into the story. According to the extras for the 2nd season DVD, for instance, the idea of Sayid and Shannon getting together was done because they wanted to find a way to throw a wrench into peoples sensibilities. I think Naveem said something like "What could be more offensive than the Iraqi soldier and Miss America?" I believe I understood that it was his idea, but I was not paying THAT close of attention at the time.

They definetly have to be making it up as they go. The plot has gotten so far off kilter even i can't follow it after watching each ep. 4/5 times! It's so mad you can't plan that. I think i read somewhere it was only meant to be on for 1 season, but JJ Abrams was so shocked at it's success they have to bluff their way along. After tonite, it looks like it!

Well they say that they have the overall storyline planned out for like 5 years or something crazy but I agree with everyone else, they make it up as they go along.

I suppose the writers never knew if the show would survive past season one, so I'm pretty sure they will just make it up for as long as the show continues to be popular! I love it!
