When I did it I couldnt have been moving more then 5-7mph and my car only went about 10 feet but I heard an awful clicking noise. As soon as I heard then noise i was able to get it back to drive and when I stopped and put it into park it seemed to be fine. I have a '97 GMC Jimmy if that makes any difference. Please help.

if it still parks and goes into gear properly you will be ok. what happens is you hit the park pawl in the transmission and if you were going faster it probably would have broke. You were lucky! we all have done it at some point or will. the noise is gut-wrenching

The clicking noise is the parking pawl trying to engage. Chances are it just skipped over the indents and didnt damage anything. If park still works on a hill you're in good shape.

as long as it goes forwards and backwards without any noise now it is fine. Sounds like it went into park and did what it was supposed to do. If there was damage to your transmission you would know it by the sound when you shift or are driving.

This is not a good idea before coming to a complete stop.
Take it easy - respect your vehicle.
If the noise returns take the vehicle to an automatic transmission service dealer.

you could desire to have extremely hit the shifter no longer hassle-free simply by fact generally in an computerized you could desire to hold the button in in case you desire to place it into opposite or park. you could knock it into independent without hitting the button in, yet park or opposite? Wow, your transmission is in all probability going to desire numerous artwork. Take it for apersistent around the block and notice if the gears replace easily. If the gears swap easily, take it to a highway the place you could bypass somewhat swifter and verify out out the different gears. suitable of success.

You're lucky it was a GM product.
The park lock rides on a notched gear inside the transmission and it's spring loaded and did what it was supose to do.

It's normal, and you're fine.

Try not to do it too much though. {-:
