Lately when runnning i've been getting painful sholder pain. I got a little bit of it before the race during the warmup and really stretched my arms and sholder, but during the race it came back and now I got it again while just sitting here during HW. My time today was 24 minutes and 30 seconds in my freshmen year. My best time this year was 21 min. and 02 seconds. How can I avoid this sholder pain?

I ran Cross Country in high school and college. I found myself with some strange injuries in a sport where you wouldn't think you would get hurt that often. Check your shoulder for swelling (feel for warm spots where it hurts - swollen areas will be hot to touch) and discoloration (bruising). These are definite signs of an injury. I grabbed a tree once as I rounded a sharp turn on a course, and I pulled a deltoid muscle (upper arm/shoulder). If there is swelling and discoloration, get it checked. It could also be tendonitis. Put some ice on it to see if that helps. Your arms don't usually hurt for no reason. There is something that is causing the pain. If it continues to hurt, get it checked by a doctor. If it's a pulled muscle or tendonitis, stretching may irritate it more. Be gentle with it. Run with your arms relaxed and swing them low - hands close to your hips. Keeping them high and tense will cause shoulder pain at times.

I am wondering if you need to stretch you shoulders and back a little more. Are you trying to run in perfect form, instead of trying to find your natural stride? I think that you see a doctor just to be sure that it is not something serious. Congratulations on your time, I was never that fast.

In addition to the other suggustions, i would really have your coach look at your form. Some improper arm movement may be the cause of your injury.

Good luck.
