First the legal requirements:
Natural-born citizen of the United States, be at least 35 years old, and a resident of the United States for 14 years.
The other attributes I would personally like to see are experience in the real world (run a business, career in the military, etc.), fairly well educated but not necessarily by college degrees, a good listener because no single person has all the answers, and finally, a great communicator.
Above all else, don't surround yourself with the same group of people who constantly tell you how brilliant you are. And finally ;-) seek out every-day people and find out how they feel, what worries them, etc.

Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter were the only good ones in recent times.

Actually, you have to be a natural citizen, 35 years of age, and have enough money/support to advertise yourself.
