I teach a 6th grade class and one of my students in the front row was fast asleep in class. What discipline policies do you (other educators) have for not sleeping class? What are ways to prevent this in the future considering the school year has just started?

Honestly, it depends. If it is a child who never falls asleep I sometimes let them sleep. If they are that tired that they cannot keep their eyes open, they will do better for the rest of the day if they can take a 15 minute rest.
On the other hand, I have 2 boys who try to sleep daily. The first time I said quietly to them that they needed to wake up and sit up. The second time I said loudly "TOM JONES wake up!" Sending them to the office for this is ridiculous in my opinion. What are you going to say? They are tired?
Do NOT let them sleep. Tell them that they are expected to stay awake in class. Period. One I sent an email to the mom. Her response was "Thank you for not letting him sleep in class!" The parents do not want their children to sleep. It is up to the parents to enforce an earlier bed time, etc. Let the parents know and hold the child responsible.

You might want to find out what's going on in the child's home before disciplining them for sleeping in class. If there are no home issues, make the child stand up for a while. I've done that before and it works. Make your classroom expectations known before the start of the school year so they will know what the consequences are for violations.

It depends on the situation....
1. If they never sleep in class, I will try to wake them to see if they are feeling ok. I will call the parent to make them aware of the situation. (just in case their is a bigger isue)

2. If they are constantly falling asleep in class, the child looses their chair and must stand. This usuallystops the issue for about a week or two. From their it escalates to silent lunch, time after school, office referrals.

I hope this helps!!

call the parents . . . I teach high school and most of my co-workers send students to the office for sleeping in class . . . me personally, I let them sleep . . and if they sleep, they have to figure out the assignments on their own . . .

I wake them up once, ask them if they'd like to go get a drink of water or splash water on their face. If they fall back asleep, I give them a 0 and then be sure to call their parents. I tell their parents what the problem is, and that I WILL NOT be waking up their child again...after that, I fail the child!

let the kid sleep. it is less you have to worry about...and then when he fails his next test for not paying attention he will get the hint to stay awake.
