You can use a complex medium, agar with some nutrients such as peptone, beef extract, etc. These usually come as a kit if you're buying it yourself.

Some bacteria, as well as fungi, will grow on plain food grade agar with no additives. Nutrient agar is available from biological supply companies like www.ctvalleybio.com This type of agar is specially formulated to grow organisms by providing a range of standard nutrients. It is also relatively safe to use because most pathogenic organisms won't grow on it. Pathogens usually require additional additives to the agar, like broth or body fluids or blood.

Agar - You can get it at a health food store. it is used by vegetarians in place of gelatin which comes from animals - and may just work in you culture experiment.
