For the same reason so many noteworthy figures of the past retain popularity. The Beatles, Chubby Checker, Abe Lincoln - some people like what they did or said during their lives, and choose to remember them. I'm not an Elvis fan, but his following is quite substantial, as indicated by the participation every year at Graceland.

Elvis is one of the most colorful and flavorful icons in musical history. I am not a die hard fan of his sound, but he is a unique part of "pop culture" in this country and recognized around the world. Like him or not he made his mark. (By the way I am living in Vegas..nuf said.lol)

i cant stand his music, and i actually like that style. i just didnt like him in general but he did produce alot of music that touched alot of people.
and anyone that dies in a tragic way always stays around (i think its becuz they dont have a chance to 'flop' and lose the popuarity)

At the time, most singers sang in one genre, or mostly one genre. Elvis sang in all genres.

i've never really liked him. i like a couple of his songs but that's about it.
i think he's still liked by a lot of people because he was different
i think he might have been one of those pioneers or something.
