The odds of choosing a red OR white chips is equal to odds of choosing a red chip plus the odds of choosing a white chip. The probability of choosing a red chip is 1/2. The probability of choosing a white chip is 1/6. The probability of choosing a red or white chip is thus 2/3. The odds are then 2:1 or 8:4

8:4
[6(red)+2(white)]/12(all)=8:12 this is the probability
1-8:12=4:12
so odd=(8:12)/(4:12)=8:4
