Try the advice of others, it is not too bad a job to do if it is just the head gasket, parts, maybe £60 for a Haynes manual, a decent gasket set and hire of a torque wrench.
Oil and filter change, fill up with antifreeze and the car is sorted for the winter.

You will have a fantastic sense of achievement when it is done.

Sounds like they are right. Depending on the engine, the gasket itself is going to be about 50- 100 dollars. 50 for a 4 cyl, 100 for a 6 cyl. The expensive part is the labor and that will more than likely be about 2-300 $$. It could end up being more if the head or block is warped or cracked. then you will be more in the $1000.00 range.

The garage will have to clean out the radiator, check the head is not cracked etc. that will cost around £400 or if you know some one who can do it for you a set of gaskets cost around £15/20

I unquestionably have yet to work out a product that works from a can. If it does, that is better than in all probability a non everlasting seal. might you have faith the vehicle when you placed those issues interior the engine? a protracted distance holiday may well be out of the question. in case you like the vehicle, then fix it wisely and shop it, yet once you in easy terms want a temp fix and commerce it in, then decide for the temp fix in a can and commerce it in. examine the instructions on the can and do what it says precisely, get rid of the thermostat once you upload those issues interior the engine and it could paintings, there is likewise a sturdy probability which you will plug up the radiator and heater middle so there will be different problems later down the line................gl No such element as a mechanic in a can....

if you take it to a garage, they will more tha likely charge around 1500 bucks. If you should happen to know someone who knows how to do this, talk them into doing it. You will probably spend around 200 bucks for the new gaskets, and maybe a little more on a few tools, oil, and antifreeze. After that, if it is the shop doing the work, they well charge a whole hell of a lot for labor.

Sounds like it might be head gasket but why did it go, overheating due to low water? corrosion due to no antifreeze?
Too often a new gasket is only a temporary palliative, often the cylinder head will have warped, and refacing it can cause camshaft problems even failiure, so really I would suggest a recon engine.
Its worth trying a gasket as a DIY job but not at garage labour rates.

sounds like head gasket to me,,If the car is over head cam the repairs will be a bit more . you could try a can of radiator repair. Stuff you put in the radiator to stop leaks. But sooner or later the head will have to come off.

IF - big IF - it is only the head gasket then replacing it should not take more than an hour. Take it to a local garage, they are less likely to rip you off than a main dealer.

Depends on the amount of damage that has been done but regardless it can be costly to repair. It may be that the head has to be skimmed which could add to the cost. Good Luck and do ensure that you go to a reputable mechanic as otherwise you could get ripped off. Good Luck.
