i`m a painter, but i don`t paint cars.paint thinner is used for oil base paints not latex base panties.don`t paint your car on a rainy day, that's a no no.there should be a store in your area that sells car paint , don`t go to a paint store...thinner is use to thin the oil base paint down so your can spray it alot easier. to thin down latex base paints , you use water not thinner..hope is helps alittle

Go to your local auto parts store like a NAPA ,they carry the Dupont Chroma-base system and can match any type of automotive paint. You will need less than a gallon for the job because after it is cut with reducer 1 gall will be almost 3. This would be the best way if you have a spray gun and compressor. That would be if this is a newer vehicle not a beater. If it was an older car with body work to do as well, I guess you could go get some oil base paint, thin it out and shoot it with an airless sprayer. Make sure if you do use a sprayer to do a good job of masking things off. A little extra time masking saves allot of cleaning up overspray.

Depends on the type paint to be thinned.

However:
Some paints require mineral spirits.
Some paints require turpentine.
Some require simply water.

Sorry I can't be of better help. For painting cars, enamel or acrylic (preferably the former) is probably best. Check Yahoo for "enamel paint thinner" to find out which is usable as thinner.

some air dry enamels, and lacquers, need to be heated to be thinned. some use mineral spirits, such as interior exterior house enamels. some use turpentine, like the fine oil paints made by Weber and Grumbacher. automotive finishes need lots of careful masking and sanding and even paint application with long strokes. clean your nozzle between loads. seriously improve quality of paint job, good luck friend.
