I had the privilage recently of listening to Sergeant Major William T. Kinney, SGT Major of the US Pacific Command. He gave a very interesting explanation as to why we are still in Iraq and Afghanistan. He said that we are currently in a World War, and that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are merely campaigns in this war. This was his question for us: where are terrorists currently going to fight 'western imperialism'? Answer: they are going to Iraq and Afghanistan. Where would they be going if we were not in Iraq and Afghanistan? They would be coming to America to carry out more terrorist attacks against our civilian population. Thus, by keeping their attention focused on our soldiers overseas, we have kept America safe from attack. The obvious flaw with this is that our soldiers are taking the brunt of it, but in reality that's what we have an army for. And despite what the media shows us, Iraq is better off now than before we invaded. Not sure about Afghanistan being better, though. Just a different perspective.

I'm not sure that we got in for the wrong reasons. We sold Iraq and Iran weapons and information back in the 80's hoping that they would eliminate each other and they didn't. I think it's entirely possible that Iraq could have had some chemical weapons at some point but we didn't have the right information. I don't believe that we ever went in to set up a democracy in the first place. We went in to show the world that they had chemical weapons and couldn't find them. Those people aren't idiots, they moved them into neighboring countries to preserve them for future use. As for getting out, I think we should get out now. All those people want to do is kill each other. We should pull out and let them do just that. Leave a couple of nuclear subs in the area just in case we need to contain the situation but get our people out now.

we got in there for the oil basically, im sure some politics and payoffs were involved too. Whether or not oil was the wrong reason to go to war is still the question. It would have looked really good if we had gone in and taken over in the week or so we did, and then leave again. Now we are laughing stocks stuck in a quagmire.

Ruth - Since when has "establishing a democracy" been a reason for the US to go to war before? Learn some history, or learn how to google.

Traditionally, our country has considered that the best reason to go to war (establishing a democracy).

Its also why Vietnam was a mistake. We didn't go to Vietnam to set up a democracy, we went because our ally France asked us to.

No. We should not pull out until we can give terrorism a really big black eye.

Two separate issues. Why we went there in the first place really has nothing to do with why we are still there years after "Mission Accomplished".

We need to get past "the first place". We cannot change the past. But we can either live in the past, or we can make intelligent decisions based on the current situation and current (not past) goals.

Unfortunately its to late to dwell on what should have been done to help the minority.

We must concentrate on making it a better place. I was a soldier you cannot win, nor change opinion with force. Give them something to live for.

We got in for the wrong reasons, but we would be even dumber to pull out too soon, after all this.

We should pull out when given an official request from the Iraqi Govt. and not until then.
