I manage a division of a large company and the honest truth is 1. I don't set work hours, if they want to work they can work 2. I don't set lunch hours, if you're hungry... EAT! 3. If you don't perform two months in a row, I don't care who you're daddy is... YOU'RE FIRED! Lol
Seriously, I think the general concensus on work has been warped. Everyone here is happy to come in and that's becuase of what I'd like to think is good leadership. Each of the managers here (company of 75 people give or take) is ex-military but we all know how to bring a good atmosphere into the work place. The main reason is, we understand there's more to life than a paycheck. As partners of the corporation, we aren't stingy. This doesn't work with every employee. Some people need to be micro-managed and for those people I advise them to work elsewhere.
I'd say a very low rate of attrition here. I can attribute that to generousity. I think greed is the main cause of attrition in the workplace. Most people start a business looking to "make it big" this company was started to make each person big.

When in high school and college, the retail jobs and restaurant job I had both had high rates of attrition. I think it was due to the overall young (immature in some cases) employees that those places employed. They often weren't reliable, and would just stop showing up. The restaurant had hellish hours, and even while in high school, the owner would often try to persuade me to stay past 10pm to help out, despite me having to be at school at 7:40am the next day. Weekends and holidays were a must for me to be there. Normally, we just had to pick up the slack when we were short-handed.

you just described my work place! Although i had to look up the word attrition to know what you were talking about. We only have 6 employees right now and are supposed to have 12. And yes we all have to pitch in to try to keep the store running, it gets extremely stressful around there, i hate it!

not really. Most people stick around. We are very careful about who we hire, and due to the nature of the job, we have a lot of tenure here.
