My son is 14 and playing football for the first time. He is doing really well, except he doesn't run very fast at all. He is a big boy, 6'1'' and a bit overweight, although he is losing alot playing sports. I would like to be able to give him tips to run faster. Btw - I couldn't run fast if my life depended on it!

There are only a few ways proven to make you faster. The first is increase muscle mass in the legs (Squat, Leg Press, etc., if your son is 14 he should be doing these anyway). Also increasing flexibility will help, but quite honestly the only way to become significantly faster is by fixing your running form. When your son is running, make sure he is looking straight ahead, keeping his weight on the balls of his feet rather than his heels, and pumping his arms forward and backwards. With the arm motion, a helpful tip my coaches have told me is: If your right leg is forward, your right arm should be curled up towards your eyes, and your left arm should be by your back pocket as if you were taking money out of your pocket. As the legs switch, the arms switch.

Improve his form and he will be faster in no time.

do a lot of agility. jump roping, ladders, and sprints. do 6 100's 4 50's, 8 40's and 2 20 meter sprints. make sure to time and make sure he improves. there are also running coaches that can help. or apply for a personal trainer at the gym and tell them to focus on agility a speed.

I cant really recommend any tips because running faster comes naturally . You can or you can't .-- The problem is the weight.

So a work-out plan on a TREADMILL should increase his speed slowly but surely -- you have to pace it out because if you over exhaust him he may EXPERIENCE OTHER HEALTH ISSUES

GOOD LUCK --

just tell him to work on sprint drills, along with some longer and slower runs. for the sprints, he needs to go as fast as he can for like 40 yards, stop, rest for like 20 seconds, then keep doing it. of course stretch for it too.

Chase him around the house with a whip. That'll learn him! Actually, I'd probably say practice, practice, practice. That's always the answer to everything.

Try this website. Dr. Mirkin has lots of good information for athletics, and he used to be a competitive runner, himself.

Put weights on his legs when he runs. That will make him fast.
