I own a 1994 (M) Ford Escort 1.3, it is a lovely economical little car ideal for getting me to work and back. But of late it is making a noise which is not disrupting the drive quality of the vehicle. When the engine warms up, so drive it for 15 minutes sort of things, a tinny grinding comes from underneath the front of the car area, squealing sort of noise when you pull away, say from stationary or when you drop down a gear to slow down and then apply pressure to the accelerator again. Also when the vehicle gets hot it will make this noise constantly when standing still in neutral basically sounds like a Kitten with a sore throat screaming trapped under the car. It is not an over-heating problem, hence Head Gasket ive checked that, despite having done 117,000 miles the clutch is fine, and in neutral it still makes the noise so it cant be the clutch or gearbox. Someone has told me the Water Pump being broken or on the way out is a big possibility. Any ideas? Any help appreciated.

Did you change the Pilot Bushing? when you replaced the clutch??? that makes a squeaking noise when the car is in gear or not since the input shaft of the transmission rides on it ??

Id start there - and has the problem been noticeable since you changed the clutch? - It can be a water pump bearing or even a Tensioner Bearing going bad , at 60k 1st timing belt then after that every 90k - might it be time or has it been done and the bearing have not been serviced along with the timing belt and water pump??

Need more info to further my help-email me...

Good Luck

From what you say it sounds like a bearing or bushing trying to lock up, the question is which one. It could be the water pump although I have never heard of a water pump doing that. If could also be the alternator power steering pump, a/c compressor, or anything that is turning when the engine is running. Does the sound change when you speed the engine up?

sounds like you actually have 2 different noises. check the exhaust system from the manifold back for loose/rusted heat shields and or brackets, thats usually a common grinding noise from under the vehicle.Your squeeling noise may be a worn fan belt, to check for that spray the belts with a little wd-40 or silicone spray with the noise present, if the noise lessens you should replace the belts as the spray will only eliminate it temporarily.

Isolate the sound. 3 things could cause what you described. A water pump going bad as mentioned above. Something hitting the cooling fins on your alternator, Or the inspection plate on your trans mission is hitting the teeth on your flywheel. Isolate the sound and you Will find one of these is the problem.

Sounds like a pully is going bad. I would have the alternator and water pump checked out. It could also just be an idler pully.
