Look for complete sentence structure; correct spelling and grammer; and begin a new paragraph with a new thought or point in a discussion. It somewhat depends on what you are intending to communicate in the paper. Look at different ways to say various things; more dynamic verbs, more description, etc.
Look for an article in a newspaper or magazine that you like -- what are the qualties about the writing style that you like?

I would double-space the paper, print it out and then ask a friend or a classmate to look it over. It is so hard to look over your own work because you've read it and thought about it so much that you might miss the little details.
Your school might have a writing center to help students with their writing. At my college, English majors had a class where we volunteered 4 hours a week and helped with everything from essays to cover letters.
If you can't find someone to help, read the paper out loud to yourself. You will then hear the grammatical mistakes and then you are also more likely to see the spelling or usage errors. That is a little trick I picked up from the writing center.
Try to see if things sound awkward or if you have run-on sentences. I have found that most people make that mistake and it is simple to correct. Also, try making an outline to organize your paper to make sure you have made all your points and have paragraphs in the right place.

I always tell my students to first see whether or not the premise is sound. Does the argument flow logically from one point to the next? Then I tell them, to check that they actually have different points. Too often a student will hand in a 1500 word essay and the student actually has only one point. The next thing to check is grammar and syntax. Finally ensure that the paper is within the word limit and that all the issues discussed are relevant to the premise stated.

definitely make sure you are in the same tense the whole time, dont switch from present to past
check for word choice and make sure you use good transition words
dont use too many pronouns or the reader can get confused
and of course check spelling and punctuation
