Carlos Gardel is the most famous tango singer in history. He was famous between the world wars, and is still loved by tangueros everywhere. One of his most famous songs is Mi Buenos Aires Querida (my dear Buenos Aires), he died really young at the peak of his career, but he is still played in milongas. He changed tango music, and made it very popular. I'm not sure of any famous contemporary singers of tango, but Gardel is the king

Project gotan. They're technically a band, but their music is very tango oriented, and their song Santa Maria has been featured in nip/tuck and save the last dance, and is one of the most popular and well known tango songs of today. Everything they do is tango and goes on for quite a while.
