I've often wondered that myself, however, back in 1994 they adopted the Contract with America as their party platform, with the single exception of the Right to Own Slaves it was the Bill of Rights of the Confederacy. This included a pledge to create a Christian Nation, as opposed to the secular one of the North. The Republicans have been controlled by the religious wrong ever since, so I'd suppose the goal at the time was for the South to Rise Again. I've never heard any repudiation of this as their platform, although they no longer talk about it, and I've heard nothing of any kind since except for the Outlawing of Abortion and the Waging of a never ending War on Terror. It will have to be never ending, since they have no idea how to even try to win.

I almost didn't answer this question, because I'm not a republican.

I do find it interesting that no republicans have, as yet, answered. Maybe they're having trouble seriously (as in, not just jabbing at democrats) defining what they believe.

Republicans supposedly believe in "small government", meaning that they don't believe in government support of certain things like welfare programs and education.

Lately, the Republican party has also become active in trying to legislate morality. Major campaign issues for Republicans include: prayer in the classroom, a constitutional amendment to forbid gay marriage, and attempts to overthrow Roe vs. Wade.

With the war on, Republicans have gotten pretty vocal about patriotism, too. They think it is patriotic to call me names because I question whether we should be in this war at all. They mostly ignore the fact that Washington, Franklin, Jefferson & the gang (the ORIGINAL patriots) questioned their government (Britain), too.

I believe their ultimate goal is to consolidate most of this country's wealth & power into the hands of a very priveleged few. I think conservative leaders would like to see the middle-class disappear, because "have-nots" are easier to oppress.
