It depends on how difficult it is to get power to the location (i.e., above the ceiling). Unless you're a serious do-it-yourselfer, you should turn the job over to either an electrician or a Home Depot / Lowe's type of store that offers installation (at an extra charge).
If you're lucky, the result will be an intact ceiling with a fan hanging from the middle of it. If that's impossible, there will be a small metallic or plastic channel attached to the surface of the ceiling and wall to carry the wires from the switch to the fan.
Good luck.

If you have access to the attic space above the room and want to do a professional job: Find your ceiling center - or the location you want the fan centered, maybe over the table. Bang a small hole through the ceiling using a screw driver & hammer - if you hit wood you will have to adjust an inch or so. Shove a wire up thru the hole about 2 feet - Now go up into the attic space and find your location - see what kind of box you will need - if it is between the joists you will need to either cut a 2x4 to run between them and mount your fan box to that or buy a fan box that has long brackets that attach to the joists. You will have to obtain power for the fan - if there is a wall switch that controls a switched outlet you can drill a hole above that location so you can feed the #14/2 romex if it is to control only a fan and not a fan light - You will have to remove the switch and do some fishing around with a single peice of wire to get that romex into the switch box - aint easy - You will then replace that switch with a stack switch so ther will be 2 switches - one for the outlets one for the fan. If there is no switch you will have to find power from an outlet - bringing the wire up from that outlet thru a hole you drilled in the plate at the top of the wall in the attic craw space. There are remote controls you can purchase and hookup the receiver inside the fan when you install it so you do not have to install a wall switch. Or hire an electrician - about $200.

Add a fixture. You're going to have to run electricity to it anyway.
If your best location is not right next to a ceiling stud (ceiling fans are heavy, mount it well!), you can use a kit that contains a fixture box and an expanding bar with teeth. The bar fits through the fixture hole in the ceiling and you twist it to reach the nearest two studs and dig in securely. Make sure the studs are close enough together for this to work.

Most importantly... brace the electrical box above the ceiling.
Place a brace (metal or a 2x4), between the ceiling joists and nail it into place then secure the box to that. Having an improperly supported ceiling fan come crashing down is not fun. Then run your electrical lines to the mounting box and the wall switch.

Properly mount a metal box of the correct shape securely into the ceiling, run wire being careful to prevent rubbing during vibration of fan, and put a light switch into the wall for it.

I tried to do it myself one time and ended up giving up and calling an electrician - it took them 2 hours and cost $175 - if there is an existing fixture there, it is easy.

they sell swag kits that allow you to mount the fan to the ceiling and swag the wire through a chain and plug it into the wall outlet.

first you have to find the "joyces" in the ceiling then mount your fan and screw or bolt it up there.
