Many of the answers below lead me to conclude there is hope for the American political system. Some others are a perfect example of the thinking (term used loosely) that threatens it.

A difficult choice for best answer. I'll have to spleep on that.

Thanks for the cogent and relevant answers.

Actually, it would be nice if intelligence and levelheadness would carry 2008. If that's what you mean by moderate, then yes.

The "my way or the highway" liberals and conservatives really get on my nerves. An intelligent human being knows that you have to consider a whole issue, and never close your mind to other peoples views. You don't have to agree with them, but sometimes if you listen you can discover that you need to adjust your ideas on any given issue.

With all the bull both parties have spouted lately, maybe we can get an intelligent independent? But I won't hold my breath.

Note to the young lady promoting the democrats and Hillary Clinton - please look up the definition of moderate. Hillary Clinton does not fit in that definition.

The Moderates have some pretty good arguing points. Both major parties are stuck on each end of the spectrum, and are fighting for the votes of the middle majority of Americans. This is almost the only outcome when you have the 2-party system. This is one reason why we've had such close election results in the last 40 years (since JFK). If you are a moderate, and there is no one you perceive to be moderate, do you vote for the lesser of the 2 evils, or do you stay home on election day? I would definitely want to see someone just stand up and admit to being a moderate, please!

I have been wishing that since the early 1980's, but it keeps getting worse. Instead of working to solve the problems of the country, most politic ans are being forced to work for divisiveness. You can't get a better example of that than what is going on with Leiberman. He is generally a centrist and is being hung for being that way.

HERE HERE! Time for the center to speak as the majority of the country and bring America back from the brink of polarizing political platforms.
