This is kinds gross, but what does it mean when pet fish have that long strand of poop hanging off them? I know it has something to do with their environment but I can't remember. Thanks!

Generally it's a sign of over feeding if they all have it. Also many fish stores use a food high in bulk fiber. Which causes a similar effect as in humans. Remember that a fair number of fish are carnivores, and can't digest plant matter very well. (Example betta.)

It's just pooping, sometimes you have a big meal sometimes you have a small meal. I'm assuming you're providing big meals I would suggest feeding your fish a bit less and see what that does to their poop. Less poop coming out means less in the tank for your filter & bacteria to break down.

It is very common for both Plecos and Goldfish/Guppies to get fecal tails. It just means they have eaten a lot, and eaten well.

Congrats! You have been doing a good job as a hobbyist!

maybe since there is no gravity or something the fish poop just sort of floats and until they are done and shake it off
man that is kinda gross!

With regards to goldfish it can mean that the fish is contipated if it trails after them for too long.

Give it less food, or more variety

It really isnt a big deal. Usually, It'll just break off when it's good and ready. You might want to feed them less.

maybe the bacteria in the filter is not breaking the poop down

Sometimes this can indicate internal parasites. Often difficult to treat, especially if the fish isn't eating.

It means your fish isn't moving around enough to shake it off, chase it with something and give it some excercise!! ?:)~~~
