Army head, General Peter Schoomaker, exposes concerns within the US military about the strain of the war on Iraq, and growing tensions between uniformed personnel and the Pentagon chief, Donald Rumsfeld.

General Schoomaker and other senior military officers yesterday accused Mr Rumsfeld of bungling the war on Iraq, and said the Pentagon was "incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically".

Major General Paul Eaton, a retired officer who was in charge of training Iraq troops, said: "Mr Rumsfeld and his immediate team must be replaced or we will see two more years of extraordinarily bad decision-making."

The seriousness of the protest was underlined by Gen Schoomaker's reputation as an ally of the Pentagon chief. The general came out of retirement at Mr Rumsfeld's request to take up the post.

Yes, he definitely needs to go. He is in charge of all the decision making that goes on. To be fair, he tendered his resignation twice, but Bush refused both times. The reason? Rummy knows to much of what really went on concerning Bush's illegal invasion, and to bring anyone else in at this point could be potentially devestating to Bush and Cheney. The truth hurts.

By the way, anyone seen that 8.8 billion that went missing in Iraq?

Everyone knows that Rumsfeld and Cheney are running the country and making the decisions. They not willing to admit their mistakes. They are totally and completely over their heads. Now, we are scraping by to pay for this war, and Bush is talking about Iran. I am so disappointed with the president. He claims to be a Christian, yet he, and those around him, are arrogant and self-righteous.

What ever happened to the hunt for Osama Bin Laden? Did he ever admit that there was no link to Saddam and any attacks on the US and/or Americans? Did he ever say I was wrong for invading Iraq, but I will stay and help since we are here? Has he shown sympathy for the families of those returning in flag-draped coffins? The answer is no.

He made a decision, and no one including US citizens and military have the right to question it. He did it, and that is the end of it. The bottom line is that the fighting will continue long after the troops are gone. Service members are supposed to be protecting our country from all enemies foreign and domestic. They are fighting for agendas. I have two family members who have done tours there. His approval rating says it all.

You are mistaking what some former military men have to say for fact. They are like the employees of a company that have had their own way for a long time and suddenly they get a new boss who shakes things up.

Check out what Generals Schwarzkopf and Tommy Franks have to say about Rumsfeld. He is a very smart man who is getting blamed for something that was not predictable no matter how many times John Kerry and Joe Biden say the opposite. Rumsfeld is a great American who is getting a bad rap.

Please keep in mind alot more military personnel has spoken out.
First of all if you are in the military and you speak out against your commander you face a real chance of being Court Marshaled.
Many of the men that have spoken out against Rumisfield did wait till they retired.Wouldn't you now come on truly how many of you would be willing to give up everything you worked for, for the last 20- 30 yrs ? Most of you would do the same thing as these retired Generals.
It does not matter who speaks out against Bush and his men the other side will just brand them as some disgruntled employee.
Yes, he should step down.

Rumsfeld is criticized by a huge group of retired military - don't believe what you hear from some. Schwarzkopf has criticized him too. See link;

Regardless of what the mudslinging (justified in this case) retired warmongers say, Rummie is the devil incarnate. The guy's gotta go. Shrub needs him though...W may be evil but he's too stupid to do a real bang up job on the devil's work.

The army is full of critics of BushCo incompetence, but so far none of them have had the guts to step up and be a patriot like Erwin Rommel did. Rommel failed, and he was forced to commit suicide, but it was the beginning of the end for Hitler.

Of *course* I'm not suggesting assassination, but maybe a military coup like that in Thailand would be appropriate. Arrest, trial, conviction and execution as necessary for any and all participants in BushCo war crimes would be the best course of action.

Well I'm not a military expert but it seems that there should be some relief for our guy's over there.
These are wary adversaries and the borders are as porous as spongebob.
Seems as though someone is not making the proper choices.
Carpet bombing seems to be the get all in war winning....level it and start over.

Well if the Army thinks so and is willing to say it, it must be true. No one knows how well the boss works other than his underlings who are forced to cover his butt all the time.
