The egg, according to evolution. Why? Because, if there was a time when chickens did not exist, then there were also no chicken eggs, by definition. So, if we were to assume that chickens evolved from another type of bird, then at some point an egg was laid that contained a bird that would qualify as a chicken. The egg layer would not be a chicken, but it created a chicken as its progeny.

This would have to be the case. The opposite (a chicken existing prior to the laying of a chicken egg) could not be, because this chicken would have to have come from an egg, and in fact this chicken would have been born from the first chicken egg. It always points back to the egg.

The Hen came first:
The egg is a potentially hen
The Hen is an actuality
Actuality Predominates potentiality

Therefore the hen came before the egg.

Since this question is labelled under Anthropology, I'll go for it.

So, which came first, the chicken or the egg? It would be the egg. As time goes by and evolution progresses, mutations occur. These mutations take place in the reproductive cycle meaning the offspring is not exactly the same as the parent. Thus the chicken came from an egg, but its subsequent egg would be ever so slightly different.

Egg. Although it is debated. For a snapshot of the debate, see the linked paper. Don't expect too much illumination.

God, being God, of course knew both were essential for continued reproduction, so HE created BOTH simultaneously.
