The most important Greek harbor is Piraeus.
Many Greeks choose to make their living from the sea due to :
1. Their tradition. They were travellers. Since the prehistoric years the Greeks were travelling (see Odysseas etc).
2. The development of commerce. They were merchants. It has been proved that the Greeks after they obtained permanent residence (prehistoric years) they dealt with commerce through the sea channels
3. The extended surface of sea and the fact that Greece is surrounded by the sea. They were fishermen. It was easy to find food.
4. Economic factors. Some islands were very pure therefore Greeks were forced to become sailors because there were not many jobs at their island.
5. Investment factors. Due to the experience gained by travelling as sailors a large number of Greeks has become ship owners.
