It must be dark and cold and the sky must be clear for you to see them. They can be seen in late autumn and winter. I think late October or early November are the best time to see them, but December, January and February can be ok too.
When the northern lights can be seen, it's best to watch them from a dark place, because you see them better then. Going a little bit out of the city is ideal, but a dark backyard could be enough.
I hope you'll see them one day. They are BEAUTIFUL! :)

January is the best month. The nights are long, so there is no real time of day that is best- obviously it will be hard to see them at noon, though; use common sense.

At the darkest and the coldest time, I would say November to March. They come in October also, but I don't remember ever seeing them in april or september.
