We live with my mother-in-law, and she has a nasty a$$ dog who pi$$es and $hits everywhere he wants.... 2 days ago he pi$$ed on my 5 month-old's "Bebe Pod" ( a little baby chair that helps them learn how to sit) and I didn't realize until AFTER she sat on it!!! eww.... I was soooooo mad! I was freaking out! I mean, what if she touched the urine and then put her hand in her mouth???? What are the chances of her getting some kind of disease? I asked my mother-in-law if she thought the baby could get sick and she said "oh, the baby will be ok", you know, she didn't seem very worried, but I AM... dogs are nasty! Do you think I'm overreacting?

I think you should ask your mother-in-law if she can keep the dog in its own part of the house or garden. I think that is a perfectly reasonable request when you have a young baby. I too would horrified if my baby had come into contact with dog's urine or faeces, but if two days have passed and the baby is still OK then I would stop worrying but try and keep your baby and her things out of the dog's way in future - WITH your mother-in-law's co-operation.
Personally I loathe dogs - they bark, bite, smell, crap all over the place and won't leave you alone (apologies to all the dog lovers on here) so no, you are definitely not overreacting.

I don't think the baby would be hurt by being in contact with urine, even dog urine. Sounds like the dog was getting territorial and made his/her mark on the baby's Bebe Pod to express her dissatisfaction with her owner paying attention to someone else.

If this dog indeed potties all over the house then I think that is a problem but not one you can do much about. Your only option would be to have your husband speak to your mother in law about your concerns regarding how clean the house is when the dog has accidents everywhere. If she doesn't take steps to prevent future accidents or at least clean the carpet I would tell her you would love for her to spend time with your daughter but you would like to do so at your home instead. If you don't want to hurt her feelings you can say "We just want you over for dinner" or "It's just a little easier than packing all the baby stuff and bringing it over there."

To be honest though I would be more concerned about the dog being hostile towards the baby. If that is the case I wouldn't take my baby over there anymore unless the dog was outside...period.

Be glad she didn't put her hand in her mouth. She will probably be fine. Call your Pediatrician to make sure. Since your Mother in law doesn't seem too worried about it...I suggest you micro manage the dog. Watch and check everything all day, everyday. The dog sounds like it needs some training along with the owner of it. If training is not important or not affordable to you give the dog up. The baby and her safe keeping should be and sounds like it is number one for you. The only reason a dog is nasty is because it is not being cared for properly.

YOU ARE NOT OVERREACTING.... YOU ARE A MOTHER WHO'S CONCERNED FOR HER BABY'S WELL BEING.
Your baby should be ok so long as the dog is well and vaccinated, just wash her stuff before she uses it, and try to keep all her things where the dog can't reach them. Also, becareful that pets can be jealous, and scared of babies ( My mom's cats are jealous and scared of my 9 month old along with my 5 year old nephew.... they like the 10 year old nephew though!!!!).

Though, if your baby shows any signs of discomfort, or anything unusual, call your pediatrician and ask.

Good luck

did u call the docter??? instead of asking us, ( which i think she will be ok) call the docter and ask them. its only commen sense for a mom to worry about her child. especially if its an infant. but first calm down. dont be mad at the dog. is it old? or did ur mother in law never train it right?i would just make sure u wipe her hands off with a baby wipe really good. oh and if u brush her teeth( or gums) do that too. but still just give her doc a quick call.he/she will tell u what to do. good luck.

first of all, your baby should be all right.
it seems to me your real trouble is living with your
mother-in-law. this is her home, her dog, and her rules.
i know times are hard and living is expensive, but if you
are mature enough to have a baby you should be mature
enough to make a home for it. even if it isn't what you
really wanted find your own place. then you can make
the rules and i certainly hope when the time comes to
get a dog of your own that both it and the baby will be
housebroken.

It sounds like the dog is acting out towards the baby. I had a cat for over 15 yrs, when I had my baby he would pea on my babies things. I had him put to sleep, I would not jeopardize my babies health for the sake of animal. If your mother-in-law is not concerned about the health of her grand child, enough to put the dog away from the child.. I would find another place to live. I don't think that you were over reacting.

I think you're overreacting wildly. True, dog urine isn't the most pleasant substance on Earth, but to go around freaking out about it and proclaiming that "dogs are nasty" is just kind of amusing. But really, if it disturbs your antiseptic, clean-as-a-whistle little world that much, try the novel approach of moving into your own place.

She'll be fine. If the dog is healthy she'll be okay I'm sure. But OMG---your mother in law should feel terrible! Of course, she's gonna take the dog's side and say "Oh, she'll be fine" but come one, put the dog outside. That's why I cannot stand to go to people's houses where the dog rules and does as it pleases. But really, I think she'll be fine :-)

Get a grip. Do you have any idea what your baby will put in her mouth when you aren't looking? I think the reason kids get sick so much these days is because people worry too much about disinfecting everything, so the germs become mutated and make the kid sick. Today my 17 month old son stuck his lollipop to the carpet and popped it right in his mouth. Do you see me freaking out? Sure, I got it away from him, but I'm not worried about him dying from it or anything...relax. You'll have much bigger fish to fry in a few months. heh heh. Have fun!!!
