Most myths are fakes put forward to subvert truth for fame, power or profit. Myths are also used to cover up a reality and perpetuate a lie; again for fame, power or profit.
The remaining myths came from ignorant people; those who believed the myths put forward by those who knew better.
Every myth tracks back to a real person in real time who had a real reason for what was put forward. Many of the producers of ancient myth were superior in intelligence to many living today.
Bottom line. Myths are fake as most will tell you. But they cover up a reality which transcends today. These ancient fakes have in fact made this present time the darkest age in human history.
Good question. Wish I had a couple of life times to answer it. If you ever get the chance start out with Yahoo search for "Two Babylons." Not meaning to 'T' off on the Roman religion, but it will give you an idea how the myths work.
Many think of myths as ignorant stories or stupid beliefs passed down by dumb adults to dumb children across ancient cultures. They do in fact have more in common with White House news leaks or CIA story plants than with fairy tales.

Most myths have some point of reality to them. In the past, they were not myths, but religions. So, it depends which variation of a myth you are asking about. Take for instance, the Noah's ark myth. Many people believe this to not be a myth, that Noah was a real person. Many ancient religions have a flood story, history shows that there was a flood. But was there actually a Noah? The flood was true and it's story traveled through many different cultures. Most Christian old testament comes from previous religions which are now studied as myths. It all depends on your perspective.

I have a problem with black-is-black and white-is-white views. Too many times, what was considered concrete fact was proven to be myth - even scientifically verified facts have been proven to be myths. I believe that all myths have some basis in historical events; perhaps many are truth - on this or another plain (sp?) of existence.
- Today, we can derive much benefit from the study of mythology, whether or not each myth is 'real' or 'fake.'

Good Question!!!!!! I'm going to say both because it is a common fact that all myths Legends folklore and stories started from fact Lets take david and goliath small dude big dude fight little dude wins but along the years small dude becomes a boy and big dude becomes a giant with a neck the size of a california red wood ok now a more modern day example office gossip bill the boss who is married is now getting a divorce betty his secretary is spending alot of time in his office with the door closed gossip fire happens and now the story says that bills wife walked in on him and betty kissing in the office and she is leaving him which probabaly isnt true the real reason betty is in the office so much is because she went through a divorce last year and is trying to help bill cope myths legends and folk lore were invented to help people cope with their beliefs and the changes that the world was haveing at the time they are used to help people put a more human face on their beliefs every story starts somewhere

Myths are neither real or fake. A myth is creation story. Whether it be the bible or the koran it is all myth. The study of mythology has absolute nothing to do with determining fact or fiction. It is the story of a cultures creation stories. The book of genesis is myth. That does not mean i am saying th bible is fiction. It purely means i am saying that the bible is a creation story of jewish origin. There is a bout a ten book set of creation mythos, so that one can cross link similiarities between cultures.

The definition of a myth should pretty much answer your question. Something is a myth because it can never be proven as real or fake.

I think they are a bit of both, The seeds of Myth had to have come from somewhere real.
"The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again."

I think that every myth has some sort of true barried down in it, where you have to look very hard o see it, I'm not saying that unicorns or whatever are real, but that some myths probably originated from a true event.

It depends on how you view them. I personally believe that some are true and some are not. Some people consider the bible to be a myth (I am one of them). Some people consider dragons to be a myth. I could go on but I don't want to bore you.
