Most of the answers are correct. The term definitely originated in poker, but has since been in common use in various fields. So for example if , say Macdonalds decided to buy Subway for $20 billion, and the shareholders of Subway wanted more, then they would tell Macdonalds to "up the ante" and increase the offer.

If used as in let's "up the ante". Then most likely you mean that you are raising the stakes of what is involved. If you are asking the person to "ante up" then you are calling them in their stand to give you what they have stated they would do for you (making payment).

Reason being is that to ante is to a) pay the ante in poker. Often used ante up, or b) make an investment in money, effort, or time before knowing one's chances.

Actually, it's "antee." This means to put money in a gambling pot. So you antee in. Like, to put in $2 to antee into the game and get the money in the pot if you win. To "up the antee" is to take a bigger risk than you usually would.... or that's what I make of it at least.

Hope this helps!
