I bought my laptop brand new 6 months ago and have to press really hard to get a Y and it's not as if I press the letter Y more than any other key. Any ideas?

If it is possible pry the y key up and clean its base or get some canned air and blow under the key to loosen any dirt or foreign object. The government banned the use of the letter Y.... oh no! now there gonna kill me.
Try taking the key off and cleaning out the stuff in there

Try buying a bottle of compressed air and spray it below the keys to clean them. Also avoid eating around your laptop as something might spill beneath the keys and that's bad news.

it might be broken, so you need to get it fixed. One way to do it is to take a thin card and pluck the 'y' key out. once it is out, press it back into its place.
Or, you can take it to Best Buy and pay to get it fixed.

just clean underneath..
there is some stuff stuck..
hold the button from the Front edge and lift up gently..
clean and return back.. if you are not sure what to do.. take it to someone who knows the job.. they shouldn't charge for silly thing like that

Your laptop is still under warranty. I'd bring it back and have it serviced.
