A myth is a story, usually fiction (not true), that is used to explain things in nature and life that cannot be explained at that particular time in history. I say usually, because some of what may be referred to within the myth may eventually be proven scientifically to have been true or for the most part proven to be true of the people, places, things, or events that occurred or existed at that time.

The majority of myths contain some element of truth, otherwise they would not be passed down. Usually a myth is used to explain some naturally occurring phenomenon and later embellished to explain nature or ethics to children.

I suppose a myth could be an elaboration of a true strory. Like the Iliad, it may have a lot of truth to it.
