There are two ways to connect to the internet with your laptop when you are away from home. First, the location you happen to be in must be a "hotspot" - like Starbucks, or big airports. Your laptop will acquire the signal and you're live.

The other method is to go to Verizon and buy a wireless internet card. This gizmo is cool, as you can get live internet while you're driving in a car!! But, it requires a monthly fee of more than $50, I think.

You seem to be making a fundamental mistake as to how wireless works.

Wireless has at best a range in the tens of meters. Your laptop establishes a connection with a base station (in this case the one in your router) and communicates with the internet through that.

If you wish to use the internet on the go you will need to connect to the internet via your mobile phone (note: this can be expensive).

To get your laptop to talk to a mobile phone you usually need bluetooth on both your laptop and your phone. You also need to configure your mobile phone to act as an internet gateway. Your phone provider should be able to give you more information on how to do this.

To connect to the internet far from home with wireless, you need to be at a hot spot, such as a restaurant or business. To connect to internet anywhere, even where there isn't a hotspot, you'd need Bluetooth. It's a bit expensive, but it will get you internet access in most cities. Still, it's not entirely reliable, and a bit slow.

The built in wireless on your laptop should work, BUT where ever you go, there needs to be some sort of a wireless access point. Many coffee shops and airports have wireless access.

get dialup for when your far from home ..

a long range connection would be 100 yards..
you won't be able to use your connection across town or country

some cyber cafes have free wifi internet ..
and most apartment complexs and a few other businesses..
