I thought I had head lice once. So I had to learn about this, even though I was mistaken. I used a water--based lubricant, generously applied in the hair. This is to dissolve the glue they use to walk on the hair and stick their eggs to it. Then you use a fine--toothed nit comb to get them out, one section of the scalp at a time.
This is fast and safe, and saves from shaving all that beautiful hair off. But to be sure, do the same treatment the next day, again.

Rub mayonaise in hair and run a fine tooth cob thru hair. The mayonaise makes the nits easier to come out!

Mayonnaise (not miracle whip) and a fine tooth nit comb works the best. Make sure you wash her pillow, bedding, coats, etc. anything that her head could have come in contact with to avoid her re-catching it once you got it out of her hair. good luck to you!
