My friend suggests the Archos Gmini XS100 4 GB Pocket Music Player (Blue) since the IPOD is more expensive, less space and only works using Itunes (meaning I couldn't download off any computer).

Your best bet would be a Philips GoGear. I personally own this one. It holds 1000 songs, comes with a rubber case and earphones, has a rechargeable battery pack, and has a built-in radio and microphone so you can record yourself. It also has a backlit screen for in the dark. There's also an equalizer built in. It uses Windows Media Player 10 (at least). If you don't have it, it's a free download. However, do NOT use Windows Media Player 11. Pricewise, where I purchased it from, it was only about $130. Not bad! Just to see what it's like, I've added the online tutorial below. Enjoy!

My bf got a Creative 20G, which was reasonably priced and he has never had a problem out of it. I have a Phillips go gear 30G, and I love it. I bought mine for about $275, his was at about $200 or so.
