Cos= cosine, as you have already been told
These are the memnonics I used when I was at school an eternity ago - and I can still remember them! - to work out the sine, cosine and tangent of the angles in a triangle.

O/H=S (opposite divided by hypotenuse=Sine)
A/H=C (adjacent divided by hypotenuse=cosine)
O/A=T (opposite divided by adjacent=tangent)

O = Opposite side to angle you are looking at
H = Hypontenuse (side opposite the right angle)
A = Adjacent to angle you are looking at (ie next to)

S = Sine
C =Cosine
T = Tangent

If you have a right-angled triangle, you can get the sine, cosine and tangent of any angle by using the above. By giving a triangle a right angle (by drawing a dissecting line at right angles to the edge up to the opposite corner, if that makes sense!)

It is very hard to explain without graphics, so good luck with my explanation!

Cos is short for cosine and its a ratio of the sides of a right angle triangle.

Its a number the length of the adjacent side to the angle divided by the hypotenuse

COS is short for cosine, which, in a right angle triangle is the length of the adjacent side (the side next to the hypotenuse) over (divided by) the length of hypotenuse (the longest side, the side that goes diagonally. It is used to work out the length of the remainig side, and internal angles within triangles.

Further to creambunmum's excellent response, an easy way of remembering the relationships of Sine (sin), Cosine (cos) and Tangent (tan) is SOH CAH TOA,

SOH - Sin= Opposite/Hypotenuse

CAH - Cos= Adjacent/Hypotenuse

TOA - Tan= Opposite/Adjacent

There are three meanings:
Shortened version of because
A type of lettuce
Short for cosine when looking at the geometry of a triangle (read about Pythagoras theorem) There's a good diagram explaining it in wikipedia.

it can mean a number of things but may mean cosine which is a triganomic function (also name for a variety of lettuce and the abbreviation for the community of science research)
