In order to earn an A in a course, a 85% average is needed. There are 4 regular tests, and a final exam which is weighted twice as much as a regular test. If the test scores are 95%, 79%, 89% and 97%, what is the lowest final exam % score that will result in a final grade of A?

I got to the point where 16 2/3% is the weight of the regular test and 33 1/3% would be the weight of the final exam, but im not sure how to set up an equation from there... thanks for the help

Each 4 exam counts for 1/6 of the score, and the final for 2/6 (soince 4* 1/6 + 2/6 is 6/6).

So you can divide each of the score by 6 (95+79+89+97)/6 = 60,
leaving you with a (85-60)= 25 points to get.
This 25 point must be the result of the required score divided by 3 (or multiplied by 2 and divided by 6), so the final score required is 75%.

add the test scores up which is 95 + 79 + 89 + 97 which gives you 360

multiply 6 (# of tests + 2 for the final exam) by 85 which gives you 510

subtract 510-360 = 150

divide 150 by 2 and get 75%

thats what you have to get on the final exam

equation is 97+79+95+89+2x = 6*85

(The sum of those 4 tests)/6 + (the final)/3 = 85%

so, (.95+.79+.89+.97)/6 + x/3 = .85
solve for x

(95+79+89+97+2*x)/6 >= 85

(360 + 2*x) / 6 >= 85

60 + x/3 >= 85

x >= 3 * (85 - 60) = 75

95+79+89+97+2x=(6*85)
2x=510-360=150
so 75% in the final exam is the answer

Effectively you are saying

(95 + 79 + 89 + 97 +2x)/6 = 85

Hence x = 75% minimum

1 regular test = x 1 final exam = 2x

4 regular tests = 4x ; 4x + 2x = 6x = total points possible

The average of the four tests is 90%.

.9 X 4x = 3.6x; .85 X 6x = 5.1x -- this is minimum points req'd for an "A"; 5.1x - 3.6x = 1.5x -- this is the no. of points req'd on the final exam to earn an "A". 1.5x/2x = 75% required on final.

Equation : (85% X 6x) - (90% X 4x)/2x = 5.1x - 3.6x/2x = 75%
