Yes. I am painfully shy, and have social anxiety, but am a public speaker, and CEO of my company. When I speak before a group, I am speaking with a purpose. There is a "reason" to be in the spotlight....it's my party -- everyone else was just invited. But social situations are different....I'm on my own then....and that's when the shyness is hard to deal with. The two are very very different for me.

I have always had a problem with shyness although I have become better with age. I have always been a very good public speaker although I don't do it very often. In my case I am usually very nervous before giving a speech or presentation but I seem to feed on the nervous energy after I get started. I recently had to do a 30 minute presentation as part of a job interview in a room full of chemists (I'm a chemist too). Many of them were PhD chemists but I felt right at home and I was very comfortable. They even asked me many questions and I answered them all without panicking.

Introverts like people just as much as extroverts do. The text book definition of introvert is a person who gives energy to others...extroverts are the opposite, the get energy from people. Two things motivate me, making a living and daily living. I believe Toasmasters is a national organization and they'll bust ya outta your shell for sure.

Yes. In fact most actors are introverts. Introverts just need to regroup after speaking publicly.

Of course they can!!! The problem is that they are lacking self confidence. Whenever I get nervous before getting on stage, I take 3 three deep breaths, close my eyes, and count to ten. Many motovations include good grades, promotions, vacations, etc. Just remember, relax, have fun, and be yourself!

Neha's probably right, I've surprised myself a few times--I'm not claiming that it was mind blowing to everybody else but they appreciated and were equally surprised with what I had to offer.
You need to confident in what you are to speak of and it would help (if it's possible) to gain rappport with your audience prior to your speech (lecture, etc).

Sure they can, just get up and pretend that you are just alone there, or that you are just practicing in front of your Mirror, good luck, and have fun.
