What country? What city?

I'll assume US, west coast - this is what I know anyway. Ballroom and Latin.

You can go as cheap as $5 per group lesson if you go to community colledges. You should take at least 2-3 lesson per week or else you will be forgetting stuff before the next class. This is usually the most beginner level lessons. Some colleges have ballroom dance teams. If you are in college of qualify otherwise (some teams accept outside people, some don't) this is the best bet. Team classes stay affordeable all the way up to high levels.

You can take group classes for $8-$10 per class in dance studios. Many studios give you extra discount if you purchase 10 lessons at a time. Studios usually have the best quality, if you go to those private studios where competitive dancers are practicing. Search for a studio near you here http://www.ballroomdancers.com but don't go toa studios that sell you package deal. It is very different than 10-lesson dance card. Package deals include a whloe dance "program" wich is very inflexible - they make you learn dances in particular order, but once you paid on the order of $1000 for it - you're in, want it or not.

Individual coaching gets pretty expensive. But - you asked about the start, and individual coaching is not where everyone usually strarts. You'll have to ask the instructor how much he/she charges.

I borrowed instructional tapes from the local library. No cost there, and if you like a tape or DVD, you can buy a copy.

I live in the Southwestern United States. My local Community College charges $56.50 per semester for a 16 week, two session per week, 80 minute per session, one credit class in Ballroom, Latin, Hip Hop, Ballet, Tap or Swing. The Public University offers 50 minute classes twice a week for sixteen weeks for $109.25 per semester plus fees.

Local studios offer group classes on a drop in basis for $8-12 for an hour to and hour and a half. They often have "punch cards" where you pre-purchase their lessons and you get one extra lesson free of charge.

I've also taken free dance classes at the public library, the community center, the local senior center, the department of parks and recreation, inexpensive classes at the arts center ($3 for students, $6 for public), and know of free classes every week that I have attended at local churches.

Have Fun!

My studio offers classes like ballet tap jazz lyrical etc.

They are 25 dollars each a month. Yet this is considered cheap since its a small studio. Bigger ones cost more. And may havbe different payment ideas such as paying weekly for each of the classes you take or maybe even having to pay for the whole year.

but i would definately just get a phonebook, look up dance schools, and call all of them you see asking and comparing prices. thats the best way to go.

good luck!

If you want to take classes, the prices may vary. Just to drop into a class, you could pay $15-$30. For a 4 or 6 week session, expect no more than $200. It also depends largely on the city you're in. I'm in Atlanta, but the prices we have here are not that bad.

it really depends where you take lessons, I take ballet tap and jazz at a small studio downtown. It cost me 120 dollars for 8 weeks (8 lessons), but at another small studio near my house, its costs 200 something for ballet jazz and hip hop.

Call a local dance studio or pick up a brochure for your local community center. What might be $100 in NYC might only be $25 in Wyoming.

It cost me $12.95 for the bellydancing DVD I picked up. It was a really good start, and I dance as well as the women at the festivals.
