The song was first copyrighted by Charles Bradlee, music publisher, in Boston, USA in 1835, with the title, "The A.B.C., a German air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte". The musical arrangement was attributed to Louis Le Maire (sometimes Lemaire), an 18th century composer. This was "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1835, by C. Bradlee, in the clerk's office of the District Court of Massachusetts", according to the Newberry Library [1], which also says, "The theme is that used by Mozart for his piano variations, Ah, vous dirai-je, maman."[2]

Lyrics: (each line represents a measure, or four beats)

a-b-c-d-e-f-g, (the comma denotes a short pause)
h-i-j-k-l-m-n-o-p, (l-m-n-o spoken twice as quickly as rest of rhyme)
q-r-s-t-u-v,
w-x-y and z,
Now I've sung my A, B, C's, (or: Now I know my A, B, C's)
Tell me what you think of me. (or: "Tell me what that means to me." or: Won't you come and play with me. or: Next time won't you sing with me.)

The modern alphabet and most rules of grammar were invented by a man named Alcuon of York, under the orders of Charlemagne, in the city ot Aachen. The real question is, why in the *bleep*, do I know that? Not sure when it was put to song, though. Sorry.

The melody, just as commonly used for "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep", was originally written in 1761 as a French song, "Ah! vous dirai-je, maman," the lyrics of which were not intended for children's ears. It's one of those simple melodies for which apparently no one knows who the composer is. Mozart is erroneously thought to have written it, but he merely wrote a set of variations based on that theme.

The "Alphabet Song" first appeared circa 1835, and was first copyrighted by music publisher Charles Bradlee in Boston, USA in 1835, with the title, "The A.B.C., a German [sic] air with variations for the flute with an easy accompaniment for the piano forte".
