This really popular girl that sits beside me in my history class, is always dumbing herself down just to stay popular. Like we had a test the other day, and we got them back today with our marks. Of course all her friends did bad, and they were saying things like "OMG, I failed, knew I would, I dont even like history though its for nerds and losers". So this girl beside me said to all her friends that she only got 35% and they were all laughing about it. Too bad I saw her test before she folded it up, and it said 72%. Shes often nasty too me because I don't wear Abercrombie jeans, so I said to her "How come you said you got 35% when your test says 83% . . . I just saw it?"

Of course she blasted me for looking at her test marks, but her friends were all like "omg give us your test, you got 72%?" I can just imagine how embaressed she was. She shut up after that.

But I still don't get why it's popular to get low marks in school? It's almost like those girls try to get low marks?

It's because there is too fine a line between "intelligent" and "geeky" for many teenagers to understand. The popular kids think that image is everything, and when you're focused like that it's easy to be convinced that one "smart" move will turn you into a super-geek. Teenagers also tend to compartmentalize things more than adults, so it's difficult for them to recognize that nobody is "all geek" or "all cool"- that everyone has a little bit of both elements in them.

Unfortunately, the media doesn't portray a lot of smart, sexy women either! Even on shows like CSI or Law and Order, the female characters often back down in arguments or confrontations with men. Jessica Simpon and her "platymapus" comments are considered to be cool. Where are teen girls supposed to look for role models who are intelligent AND attractive?

Because most kids who are popular are the ones who don't care about their grades in school, they just care about being part of the crowd, and with family life the way it is in america, the dumb crowd is a pretty big and popular crowd. It's appealing to other kids to be a part of the 'in-crowd', and not be labeled as a 'geek'.
What they don't realize is that being part of the minority always gets more recognition than being part of the majority.

Popularity is garbage. There is no use. By the time she's 20 she might be a homeless or cleaning highway. So going her way is bad. She's looking for a future in the Dumpster University.

Amongst the sheep, no one wants to stand out. If they do, they will run the risk of being accused of acting as though they were "all that."

Who knows, maybe they are too busy thinking of cheerleading plays in their head. She just wanted to fit in with the rest of her uncomprehensive suck-ups!

They are trying to be more stupid than boys. Boys like to feel smart, so if all the girls are stupid they won't feel bad.
