At private schools, you pay a tuition because they are not funded from the government because the overall belief if your parents send you to private school, is that it's a better alternative to the public schools.
I went to a private preparatory school from grade 1 to grade 8. But I'm in a public high school now, and I really don't notice too much difference. Some private schools are very good, while others arn't that good at all. The more a private school charges for tuition, the more services that are offered at that school. My school had tennis courts, a huge library, lecture halls, and a each student in the upper grades had access to a laptop computer that they use for each year. Most public schools can't ofer that, but if a private school is very small, and only charges a small tuition, then they may even have less services then a public school may have for there students.
Usually parents send there kids to a private school because they like the idea of smaller class sizes and more of a family enviornment. This is usually the only benefit to smaller private schools, but as they grow larger with more students more tuition is collected and expansions are added onto the school. Sometimes the school becomes so large and offers so much that parents want there children to go there just for the prestige or the more excelled services.
Another reason, is that some private schools offer advanced education to the students. In a private school, it's teacher to student. Each student has there own level, and they can build that up to get higher an higher since the teacher to student ratio is better than public schools (Because of the small classes in private).
Some people say private school kids are snobs, and arrogant little whiny spolit kids. NOT TRUE. Private schools are simply an alternative to the public schools, so the school needs money to pay since the government doesn't like these alternatives. The money comes from the tuition paid by parents.
- Hope this helps :-)

They normally don't have the same curriculum. Private schools generally will have religious classes where you aren't banned from prayer, or learning about creation. Usually smaller class sizes.
