People learn at different speeds and ways. Get some books or videos, find the best way you feel comfortable with. If you're dedicated and practice daily you'll learn quite fast. Just be patient. I taught myself guitar, I started when i was 8.

Try getting a couple introductory lesson books for classic guitar from a music store, and start working through them. Start learning note names, scales, and finger positions. Learn how to hold your guitar correctly from the start, because bad positioning can create problems down the road. It depends how long it will take. If you've played other instruments, you might pick it up easier than if this is your first try at an instrument. Just keep working at it, practice often, and you will get the hang of it.

You should start w/ an acoustic guitar, and learn all the chords, don't worry it will hurt your fingers (if first time) Get a chord Book. Just hammer out those chords b/c they will never leave your life after that. Then you graduate to Electric guitar, get an amp, distortion,or any effect you want. Really start w/ acoustic, and those chords though-lessons always a +. There is NO time estimate, b/c you are always learning to play. If you practice everyday, in 6-9months you should be somewhere, not a band!!!

YOU SHOULDN'T,
you can learn to play the guitar by yourself for most types of music but Classical is another matter.
It requires learning to read music and practice, practice, practice.
and takes forever because you are always learning something new because you create it yourself.
You should take lessons from a competant teacher.

BUT, if you insist on learning on your own. here is a link
that offers free on-line lessons. Dedicated to Andres Segovia, THE greatest classical guitarist of the last century.

and here you can look up teachers in your area that teach this style.

It depends. Learn Smoke on Water and Iron Man as your 1st songs.

If you like Stairway to Heaven, there are many ways of playing it. There's the easy way and many harder ways of playing it. For example, Jimmy Page uses a 12-string guitar in that song. Once you get better at guitar, you can play 2 notes at once (ovtaves) so it sounds like you're playing it on a 12-string. It's a fun song to play.

Look on ultimate-guitar.com and 911tabs.com to learn your favorite songs.

You shold go with ESP guitars. The nicer ones come with active EMGs, grover tuners, set-thru necks, string-thru bridges (good for drop tunings), and a lot of nice stuff.

I like playing guitar a lot and is most of what I do. If you really enjoy it, you'll learn really fast, but if you're being forced to play guitar, don't play it and learn an instrument you really like to play.
