I agree with what Sal said. Wayne has recovered from the broken foot, played a couple of games and been suspended(unfairly) for three matches in the friendly. He has had quite a long lay off from continuous play and needs to get his match fitness back. He can only do that through training and game time. You know I watched the game with Benfica and he is a marked man. Referee's are watching him like a hawk, players are diving every time they come within two feet of him hoping his reputation will award them the free. He is under intense media scrutiny and yet people expect him to have a mind of steel where nothing effects him. Your words, "why he isn't playing the way all of US are used to " is interesting. He plays well we want better, he plays better we want more still. He is young and half the reason for form slumps is pressure and expectations. Wayne will be back. He needs some time to recover his fitness. He's not a bad kid.

well, he’s still obviously still trying to get his groove back but maybe the team itself just isn't playing so cohesively at the moment which is why for the most part rooney isn't as effective as he used to be. and i think andy gurl is right, the opposition’s defense is just too centered on rooney and it’s obvious that he can't get very creative in that position as he does think in a rather linear way. and he gets easily frustrated which makes him lose his focus fast. but having said that, overall I think the team itself has been sub-par in spite of the results it’s been getting. they couldn’t quite deal with reading (pretty solid defense there) and saha is great and that goal was pure genius but having gone thru the entire match, i couldn't help but think getting that ball away from benfica was just a lucky stroke and not due to some really clever play by man u.....

Very simple:in soccer players do not perform always with high standards.
That is the beauty of football: it is a team-game where it is not just one player that makes the difference, but the whole group of players.
In addition, he is 21 years old! He has a huge amount of time in front of him in becoming more skillful and more efficient.
Adriano is several months that does not score in the Serie A, yet he is one of the best player in the world.
Even the best players in soccer history have had their lows... players like Maradona, Pele`, R. Baggio, Platini some times were absolutely inconsistent in their game, but at the end they will be remembered forever for their skill and their achievements.

A couple of reasons should be noted.
-First, the English media has him under a microscope and criticize every little mistake he makes. Rooney knows this and must play under this intense pressure. He also has to live his life under this scrutiny (see why Beckham moved to Spain).
-Next, he isn't getting the service he deserves. He is playing with Saha, a similar striker and not with Van Nistlerooy, a better passer and distributer of the ball. Man Utd didn't make any great signings in the offseason for great midfield playmakers, although Scholes is looking good.

I think that Rooney was playing with a hangover today or maybe he was simply lamentable while contrarily, C. Ronaldo was flying on the field for the whole ninety minutes.

The manager is saying he is not playing as well because after not being able to play those few games he needs to play a couple games before he gets in the swing of things again.

The way we're used to seeing him play is towards the opponents goal. He has been playing left sided 'midfield' and spends too much time running towards his own goal.

he needs a bit of time to recuperate from the suspension.......
plus the english media is second to none in celebrity microscope vision...after the americans..........so they'll criticise even wen he turns his hand into a fist.
