According to all the historical sources, I don't think you'll find anything on screen that comes as close than this film.

I did not see it, but have always said, "To make a realistic movie of the Crucifixion you would have to have an R rating." History tells us that Romans were barbaric when it came to punishing people. Imagine what a back would look like after being wiped 39 times with sharp metal pieces stuck in the wipe. I can not imagine the suffering.

Yes. The punishment of crucifiction was a very brutal act. The victim was mostly naked or stripped of all garments except the undergarment. More often than not, the victim was tied instead of nailed. The act of crucifiction wa s for a public display of humiliation. After a while the victims legs were broken to hasten smothering as their weight was drawn down to eventually collapse the diaphram thus resulting in death. History records this brutal Roman act as did the Holy Bible, but with less detail. Yes is was as acurate as possible but the experience was probably worse.

Some people have said the violence was over the top, and I've even heard that the torture scenes weren't gory enough. I do remember, however, all the controversy over the Passion being a cheapshot at Jews. After Mel Gibson's recent comments, I can't look at the Passion as anything but that.

No.
It was a typical Hollywood scam designed to make big money, sort of like a combination of gore (think "Texas Chainsaw Massacre") meets demonism (think "The Exorcist").
Nuttier than a case of Planters peanuts.
But, heck, there was no genuine historical Jesus, so Mel is just as entitled as anybody else to make up his fairy tale version.

No, it's full of really huge historical errors (ex. clenching the nails). A good film, in its way...Relied too heavily on John for my taste, but still worth struggling through.
Except for the end. Eww, how Sunday School clean-and-sparkly magic-Jesus can you get?

It was as close to the truth as hollywood possible. No one could imagine how much Jesus went through for all of us. (Yes even the ones who think they know what is real, Jesus died for you too). Mel gibson put so much heart into this movie. He did reach hearts and minds everywhere and show them the truth, but I guess as we read here we haven't reached everyone.

Since nobody can actually know this, your level of belief as to its accuracy/realism would be confined to how well the movie adheres to the source you prefer to use. There are actually many different versions of the event.

The movie, was breathtaking, visual and the music grips your body. Despite, the language barrier we were universal knowing Jesus died for our sins to save our lives.
