what kind of questions are typically asked in a phone interview?

Try to treat it as a face-to-face interview. Sometimes, they are just screener interviews from the recruiter or HR person where they ask why you left your last job, why are you interested in this job, and salary requirements.

Other times, if it is the hiring manager, they can ask very specific questions. Often times, they will ask you to go over the your job qualifications and how your experience fulfills those requirements. Try to remain positive...and upbeat..and calm if a question is difficult. I, myself, have gotten a behavioral question (situational hypothetical question) on the phone and I was pretty surprised...just be prepared for specific questions like that.

Best of luck.

Questions during a phone interview can vary from basic introductory questions (i.e how did you hear about this position/what experience do you have/etc) to more in depth questions about the position/company. It really depends on the person interviewing and position you're applying for.

Some managers choose to use phone interviews to scan applicants so that they can determine who is worth bringing in for a face to face interview. Yet some managers prefer to use a phone interview in place of a face to face interview, because it is easier for them.

The best thing to do is expect any kind of question to come your way and treat your phone interview as if it was being conducted face to face. So that means no radio in the background and try to sound as professional as you can.

Same questions as a regular interview. Write the answers to your questions out and be prepared for anything. Watch your tone of voice. You can really hear a smile on the phone. Good luck! Get the job!
