I wanna have an extra storage for my laptop, people have told me these solutions:

1) Get a rack for IDE Hard disks with usb support to have the maximum storage, maximum speed, cheapest solution..

2) Get an external usb hard disk for but you won't be able to run the full speed if attached to the desktop computer through usb..

I didn't get a specific answer about the speed of copy and paste in the both of them when connected with usb, is it like flash memory or faster or slower??

Better get 2.5" hard disk which you can take it anywhere because it fits to your pocket or on your laptop's bag.

2.5" hard disk is powered through USB, unlike 3.5" external hard disk which have separate power adaptor.

If you ask me, then the best solution and I preferred is 2.5" hdd which is more portable. Also, I got some problems personally with external 3.5" hdd (most especially when connecting this to slower machine).

Regarding the speed through copy and paste, they don't have big gap if one is faster, but consider the convenience when connecting both gadget.

USB is definately SLOWER than flash drives- but they offer more capacity.

How much extra memory do you need? If only a little, then flash cards or memory sticks are a solid, inexpensive option.

If you need a lot of storage and a lot of speed, a new hard drive inside your laptop would be the best option- and the least annoying in the long run. No extra parts, no extra steps, nothing to misplace...

External drives are OK, mine is a 40G laptop drive in an aluminum housing. It is 'plug and play' for Windows XP, AND it is powered by the USB (a sweet option). Even though it is small (smaller than an iPod) it is still both annoying and rather slow for many functions. You won't want to watch a movie or listen to music on a USB drive.

Another option, one that is actually slower yet, is to use an on-line storage site. Dump a bunch of your less-used files on-line.

You see, part of the question is what in the heck are you doing? Why worry about cut and paste speeds, for example, because you'd dump any active documents to your main hard drive for easier access. You'd use the external drive for shuttling big files, storing big rarely-accessed files, etc. Photo albums do well on external memory, as do back-up files, archived files, etc.

External USB hard disks are the way to go as long as you dont need the ultra portable convenience of flash memory. The hard dist is many times faster, cheaper and also lasts much longer than flash memory.

defrag your drive , get more memory , compress your drive these are just a few ideas that should help you out with both speed and performance an external would be helpful but not really necesary if you uprgade your hard drive and get a bigger one , and it all depends on the speed of your usb hub should be 2.0 or better for optimal performance

get an external hdd and if your laptop support connect them using fireware.
if it does not support fireware use usb to connect ... yes ... you`ll get slower access to the hddusing usb but i have such solution (using an external segate 400Gb HDD) and i`m happy with what i`ve got ... it has costed me arround 300$
