I'm in the same business. I want to get some sponsors for the 2007 season. However, I'll be totally honest with you. It's really hard for companies to take you seriously when you're alone. Be sure to have the support of a team first, even though you're not "active" so to speak. Then, find a manager that knows what he's doing and let him take care of everything. I'm still trying to find a sponsor, but I manged to get backed by a big time team in a Junior Series and I also have a management team. Since this happened not only have people in companies started to take me more seriously, but the attitude of everyone regarding this issue has totally changed from "you're dreaming" to "damn boy!" So... before you start doing proposals be sure to get in touch with a team in the category you want to race, let them now your plans and if they agree to help you and back you up find a good manager. That will help, first of all because they've got the contacts and second of all because they know what they're doing and how to sell a driver. My revised proposal was nothing compared to the one done by my managers, so take your time to find the team and the manager and let him handle everything. Manager charge honorary fees (or at least the ones I know) so he can't charge you for his services (in theory) until you start making money. They usually take a certain percentage comission which I believe is about 7% of your total earnings per season. So follow my advise, not only will you be less stressed about how to do the proposal and built a portfolio, but you'll also be in the hands of qualified people who do that for a living, and since you'll also be backed by a team people and companies will take you more seriously. I'm about to land my first of four sponsors within fifteen days after years of trying to find one.... so, follow my advice, it'll work out better.
