There is one thing I can think of that might cause this: something rotting above your ceiling. Most likely it is either an animal that made it's home in your attic and died there, or something causing wood rot -- most likely high humidity/condensation/water. Find a brave soul to send into your attic to investigate what is going on and then have the situation handled properly right away. Good luck!

A close look should distinguish a little better. If it has long legs and walks like an ant, it could be termites. If it doesn't have pronounced legs and crawls like a worm, it's some kind of larva. Guy is right- check the attic for a dead animal.

the maggots would be the offspring of flies or some other insect. most of the time, the eggs are placed in decaying matter. you may want to cut a little hole in the ceiling to make sure there isn't a dead animal up there. be careful, there could be a whole lot more maggots up there.

They sound like termites. Call an inspector pronto. The problem is really bad if you're seeing them on the ceilng. You could have some unsafe conditions in your roof.
