In July I was verbally offered a teaching position by the Superintendent of a high school, who said his "word was gold" and only needed the approval of his board, which he assured me would happen. Based on this information, I traveled to the state the school was located in, and rented a car to begin looking for apartments. The day I arrived, the Superintendent called me to notify me that enrollment projections had changed, and there would no longer be a position for me. Do I have any legal right to request reimbursement for my plane ticket and rental car costs for the trip?

I would send a registered letter with an intemized cost for my travel to the president of the school board asking for reimbursement. At this point, I would not get too nasty. Just say that you were induced by the Superintendent to make the trip. If that gets you nowhere, I would file a small claims judgement againts the district.

Send him a an itemized statement with copies of all expenses certified with return receipt. Also send same to the School Board with an explanation. If all else fails take him and the board to court.
