If you step on glass or a syringe or drop hydrochloric acid on your feet, you'd appreciate having to wear shoes.
And in the Land of the Lawsuit, I can guarantee that if a kid did drop something and hurt themselves, they would lay the blame fairly on the school. $$$$$
They have a duty of care towards you and EVERY workplace I've worked at has required footwear as a health and safety issue.
Think yourself lucky.
I had to wear a knee-length skirt, button-up short-sleeve blouse, blue and yellow striped tie, white ankle socks and black "shiner" shoes, as we used to call them, to school.

I believe that we should because some people have really nasty smelly feet and weird looking feet and I don't want to see or smell that all day!

umm yes you should. thats rather unsanitary to not. you know all the germs floating around at schools? if it bothers you that much just wear flip flops.
