I am pregnant and I know that people have lived in older homes for yrs. and yrs. even before any know issues w/ lead. The paint in my home does not flake. There may be a large chip here and there from paint loossining w/ opening & closing of windows but that is it. My landlord gave a brochor 2 me upon moving in stating "older hms. may have lead ect." everything in the home has been painted and re painted literally probably 100s of X's even recently. Should I be concerned for my unborn childs health? I know women who had children in this era R healthy ect. I'm just worried. Should I move? I really like the home. My concerns are w/ lead.

Just because your home was built then, it is not a guarantee that lead was used. I would keep your child from chewing on the window sills, just in case lead is present, but other than that, I wouldn't worry about it. When and if you ever do extensive remodeling, stay in a hotel until the dust settles.

I would be more concerned about lead in the water, if the pipes are old. Get the water checked, pronto!
Talk to your local health unit. In Canada they will check the paint for you, to see if it is safe, and if not tell you how to deal with it. We had the same concerns in our century home.
As long as the paint isn't chipping, it isn't a huge concern, but the water should be checked right away.

The lead is only a problem if you EAT it. So you're fine. Before your child is old enough to move around by itself, you should ask to have all those windows stripped and repainted with lead-free paint.

You should talk with your local Public Health Nurse who can tell you what to do and who to contact. Your landlord may be able to get the lead and asbestos abatement for free or next to nothing. It does need to be addressed because the dust can contain lead and will be breathed by you and your children.

Congrats on the baby.

a home of this age will have several problems that will need adressed first ;
1) lead paint on walls , several layers
2) asbestos insulation
3) inferior wiring (electrical)
4) inferior plumbing
5) possible mold and other such problems

so be sure to do your homework and be very cautious, it may need more work and cost more to renovate, than to build new ,
good luck with your pregnancy and hopefully a healthy child.

if you are really worried you can get someone to strip and re-paint the home. you will need your landlords permission, and will probably pay for it yourself. The issue is not as important now, but your child being exposed to lead after it is born can impair development

No, the baby will be fine. The problem arises when baby eats lead paint chips. That's why lead paint was outlawed. If it is painted over, you will be fine.

The lead paint is harmful to children because they eat it. Don't eat the paint and you will be fine.

Have a lead-based paint inspection done on your home.

ask your doctor, he or she can do a lead test to tell if it's bad enough. you might have to move, flaking paint is not good for a little one.
