Get up very early - even when you post a time folks will show up at 5:30 and 6:00.
Make sure you have friends to help you out.
Make sure you have lots of signs and have a friend check every so often to see if they are still up (I once had a neighbor take down all my signs thirty minutes after I started my yard sale - how rude!)
Have one of those carpenter aprons tied around your waist to keep the money in. Make sure you have some fives, ones and quarters to make change.
Lock your doors and windows and have one friend whose only job is to keep an eye on your home. -- I had someone break into my house once during a yard sale and steal my mother-in-law's purse.
You mentioned you live in a rural area. Ask a local quickie mart if they will let you put your things next to the station instead. That way your house is safe and you get more traffic.
You might also consider a flea market table instead. - it cost something but you get more traffic.
Have a cooler filled with ice and canned drinks or a lemonade stand, and baked goods. you will be surprised how well these go. A lot of folks who go to yard sales start early and go all morning until late afternoon. A chance to grab a snack is really appreciated, and you make a little something.
Have something like a small exercise trampoline with your kids jumping on it in front, to get attention to the sale. Anything that is eyecatching.
Be willing to to let things go and don't take it personally when others don't want to pay for your treasures. Try not to be surprised when people beg to buy your trash on the curb!
I wish you the best. I had a big yard sale when I moved recently to Charleston, SC. It was crazy!

Use tables; keep your stuff off the ground and closer to eye level... Organized your things like you would see in a store: Kitchen, Bath, Clothing etc. Use little circle stick-on lables to price all your stuff. Set a price that you would like on each item. You can decide at the sale if you are willing to bargain with people if they want to pay a lower price. Also, have plenty of cash on had to make change (maybe $100 in 5's, 10's and 1's) Don't be caught without it, you could loose a sale.

If you live in the county you need to put up signs pointing the way to your house for one. If people have trouble finding your house they wont continue to look for it. If you have clothes make sure they are clean, hang them up rather than putting them on tables, some older people cant bend down and look. Put the nicer things out front where they can be seen by people driving by. Dont try and make a fortune, price your things in accordance with what you might pay for something. Put an ad in the newspaper too. List what you have. Good luck.

Yes, as a previous participant said, watch for those who may want to distract you. I suggest if you have kids or other family members to be with you at your Yard Sale to help you make sure no one steals anything from you while you are helping another customer. I know a family who did this. They caught several trying to steal. But be careful of course.

Price things to sell and still expect some bargaining. Garage sale clientele do not want to pay big bucks. Watch for packs of people.....sometimes their scam is to distract you while you're being ripped off. Most likely you'll have a good experience and earn a few bucks.

Try to get neighbors to have a sale to. The more the better. And you can mark everything. Sell soft drinks also. and put a sign up that say no public restroom. You don't want people going in your home.Good luck.
